Composed in 1937, Bartók’s sonata for two pianos and percussion is one of the dramatic masterpieces of the twentieth-century piano repertoire. In this concert it is performed by two of the outstanding pianists of our time and two exceptional percussionists. It is contrasted with other outstanding twentieth-century pieces for two pianos: Debussy’s En blanc et noir from 1915, and Rachmaninov’s second suite, composed in Italy in 1901.
