The internationally renowned Chiaroscuro Quartet perform one of Haydn’s best-loved quartets from the Op. 76 set, and music by Franz Berwald, one of Sweden’s most famous composers, born the year before Schubert. His third quartet, composed in 1849, is a superb example of mid-nineteenth century romanticism. The concert ends with one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire, Schubert’s penultimate quartet, known as ‘Death and the Maiden’, named for the theme in the second movement, which Schubert took from a song he himself wrote in 1817 of the same title.

The programme listed in Kings Place What’s On Dec 2016 – Mar 2017 and the LCMS Concert Diary 2016 – 2017 includes Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14. Due to exceptional circumstances, the quartet will now be performing Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
