Overview

LCMS – Dante Quartet with Philippe Sly (baritone)

Jonathan Dove Who Wrote the Book of Love? for baritone & string quartet
Janáček String Quartet No. 2 Intimate Letters
Mendelssohn String Quartet in A minor Op 13

The renowned Dante Quartet presents a programme inspired by Valentine’s Day! Their concert begins wih Janáček’s second quartet, completed in the last year of his life and titled ‘Listy důvěrné’ (‘Intimate Letters’) after his passionate correspondence of more than 700 letters with Kamila Stösslová.

The Quartet is then joined by famous bass-baritone Philippe Sly to give the premiere of a new work for baritone and quartet by Jonathan Dove. Who Wrote the Book of Love? sets seventeen lyrics by Alasdair Middleton, each exploring the theme of love through a sequence of different poetic modes – Greek Love,Persian Love, Gallant Love, Cold Love, Gypsy Love – each echoed in a prismatic array of musical colours. The concert ends with Mendelssohn’s beautiful A minor quartet, based on his song on the theme of love ‘Ist es wahr?’ (‘Is it true?’).

This concert is generously sponsored by Sarah Chambre.
