Overview

Navarra Quartet

Part of Kings Place Festival 2015

Dvóřak Two Cypresses for string quartet B.152, Nos 3 & 12
Beethoven String Quartet in C-sharp minor, Op. 131

This concert, featuring the wonderful Navarra Quartet, is a typical LCMS event. Since its formation in 2002, the Navarra Quartet – Magnus Johnston, Simone van der Giessen, Marije Johnston and Brian O’Kane – has built an international reputation as one of Britain’s most dynamic and poetic string quartets. As well as winning prizes at the Banff, Melbourne and Florence International String Quartet Competitions, the Quartet has appeared at major venues throughout the world, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Berlin Konzerthaus, and international festivals from Grachten, Sandviken, Schwetzinger, Rheingau, Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, Aix-en-Provence and Bellerive, to Bath and the BBC Proms.

The Navarra’s programme begins with two of Dvóřak’s beautiful ‘Cypresses’ for quartet, based on some early songs he composed in the 1860s and subsequently reworked into delightful quartet miniatures. These prelude the main item in the concert, Beethoven’s great C-sharp minor quartet – one of his last quartets, and arguably one of the pinnacles of western classical music.
