Florilegium – Music at the Court of Frederick the Great

BAROQUE UNWRAPPED

Benda Symphony No. 6 in G
JS Bach Ricercar for 3 and for 6 from The Musical Offering, BWV1079
CPE Bach Flute Concerto in D minor
CPE Bach Trio Sonata in C minor Sanguineus and Melancholicus, Wq161
Quantz Flute Concerto in D

In the first half of the 18th century, the King of Prussia, Frederick the Great, assembled some of the finest musicians and composers at his residence ‘Sans Souci’ in Potsdam. Here they engaged in nightly performances with the King, who always took an active role when he was not off warmongering.

This concert, performed by the flute, two violins, viola, cello, bass and harpsichord of the famous period-performance ‘Florilegium’ Ensemble, features music by the most well established musicians at his court – his flute teacher Johann Quantz (1697-1773), court harpsichordist C.P.E. Bach (1714-88) and Franz Benda (1709-86), who was the leader of his court orchestra.

The Clara Quartet is an dynamic and vibrant new string quartet based in London. Since its formation in 2014, the quartet has performed at venues including Cadogan Hall, Southwark Cathedral, the Southbank Centre, St Mary Abbot’s Church in Kensington, and the Royal College of Music’s Britten Theatre. The ensemble was also selected to record the soundtrack for the re-release of Hitchcock film The Lodger at Abbey Road Studios, in the same hallowed space where the Beatles recorded their albums. The Clara Quartet is looking forward to upcoming engagements and competitions at several venues during the 2015/16 season.
