In June 1730, a newspaper article announced a new keyboard instrument, ‘the like of which has not been heard’. This was probably the powerful instrument Bach commissioned to perform his wonderful harpsichord concerti at the famous Leipzig coffee concerts – masterpieces which were to become the model for solo keyboard concertos for the next 200 years.
