Bach’s Leipzig period is associated with his enormous output of cantatas and masses. But he was also the organiser of a famous series of coffee concerts at Zimmermann’s Coffeehouse on Catherstrasse. Records show that orchestral works by Handel and Telemann featured at Zimmermann’s, as did Bach’s own orchestral suites. Here Telemann’s virtuoso showpiece, Handel’s elegant Water Music and Bach’s own famous orchestral suite in B minor create a fascinating juxtaposition.
