The wonderful Phoenix Piano Trio perform one of Haydn’s most beautiful trios, and the mighty B-flat piano trio by Schubert, a pinnacle of the trio repertoire.
In between, they pay tribute to one of Denmark’s greatest Romantic composers, the long-lived and prodigious Niels Gade (1817–1890), close friends with both Mendelssohn and Schumann. His beautiful and spirited ‘Novelletten’ was one of his most famous and often performed set of pieces in the late 19th century, still being played regularly in the precursor series to LCMS – the South Place Sunday Concerts – until the 1920s.
