The Rautio Trio – Jan Rautio, Jane Gordon, Victoria Simonsen – present a programme that focuses on the tradition of eighteenth-century artistic patronage in Vienna from Haydn through to Beethoven. The Martines family lived in an apartment in a large building on the Michaelerplatz, in which Haydn also lived in his 20s before becoming Kapellmeister to Prince Esterházy. Whilst Marianne von Martines (as she signed her manuscripts) was of a higher class, as a woman she could not have been a professional composer. Beethoven took a different path again, managing successfully to cultivate the support of a selection of rich patrons in Vienna.
